Description
Description

Iowa Workforce Development is seeking to procure services from a qualified vendor to provide disability
inclusion training. Below is a brief description of what is needed.
Iowa Workforce Development (IWD); in accordance with its mission of “Serving all Iowans” and its vision
to “create, enable and sustain the most future ready workforce in the nation” is undertaking a proactive
approach to improve service delivery to individuals who experience a disability and to the employers
seeking to employ individuals with a disability.
Disability inclusion training seeks to empower and equip workforce professionals to understand the
business community and help businesses to become more inclusive of individuals who experience
disabilities and other barriers.
Given that attitudes about persons with disabilities are instrumental in forming behaviors toward
individuals with disabilities. Training for workforce professionals, partners and employers that changes
the attitudes they have about persons with disabilities, they will be more open to changing their own
behaviors and creating a more supportive and equitable environment.
The essential content of this training should include instruction on:
• Teaching employers and other professionals to look beyond the disability and to consider the
individual on a case-by-case basis.
• Increasing employers’ confidence in their ability to work with persons with disabilities.
• Reducing fears and concerns through the exploration of biases, myths, and stereotypes.
• Opening communication between persons with disabilities and employers.
• Demonstrating that accommodations are not necessarily complex or expensive.
• Exploring frequently held attitudes toward persons with disabilities, and how those attitudes
impact the employer’s ability to evaluate, hire, work with, and supervise people with disabilities.
• Educating employers on the issues of language and etiquette when dealing with persons with
disabilities.
• Guidance on acceptable terminology, etiquette, and behavior.
• Sharing information about the wide network of resources available to everyone.
Following the successful completion of the training, each participant should receive a certificate of
completion which carries CEU credits for Clinical Rehabilitation Counselors (CRC) and the Society for HR
Management (SHRM).
Also, additional learning opportunities should be made available following the training in the form of
virtual Community of Practice (CoP) sessions.
Training delivery would begin no later than May 2023.
